This article provides a systematic overview of the current empirical research on handwriting on paper and on tablets. The main focus is the direct comparison of these two writing environments with regard to their effects on the writing process, as well as on learning and memory performance. Key influencing factors such as developmental stage, familiarity with the medium, cognitive load, and acceptance are examined in detail and assessed on an empirical basis.
In synthesizing the research findings, possible potentials of digital media integration are discussed. At the same time, significant uncertainties and a variety of research desiderata become evident. In light of the still limited empirical evidence, only cautious and context-dependent recommendations can currently be made for practice.
